Foldartals allow the player to influence the Expeditioner's Joklumarkar run's environment in various ways and are divided into Layout and Origin ones:

  • Layout Foldartals allows the player to choose certain node(s) and/or change them, whether to fixed or random ones.
  • Origin Foldartals apply various benefits upon entering the chosen including giving Collectibles, applying buffs, and alters the node's type.

There are 38 Foldartals made up of 19 Layout and Origin ones, and further divided into four themes: Clan (Thjodar; ᚦᛃᛟᚦᚨᚱ), Nature (Andar; ᚨᚾᛞᚨᚱ), Soul (Snjofna; ᛊᚾᛃᛟᚠᚾᚨ), and Vision (Dikilleikar; ᛞᛁᚲᛁᛚᛖᛁᚲᚨᚱ). Foldartals also have three tiers, with the first denoted by a four-pointed star (✦), the second by a five-pointed star (★), and the third by a six-pointed star (✶). The higher the Foldartal's tier, the stronger its effects will be.

The Origin and Layout Foldartal of the same theme could trigger a concord when pieced together, which could give the player additional benefits (excluding the Vision concord). Two Vision Foldartals must be combined with each other, so there are 325 combinations of Foldartals in total. In addition, there are four styles that are used for rhetorical ornamentation when making a Declaration. These styles have a possibility to appear with the Foldartals when playing on difficulties Challenge the Nature +3 or higher, which could trigger more positive effects in game when being used.

Declarations could only be made on the main map – before entering any certain node. If one enters hidden operations in non-combat nodes and uses a combat-related Origin Foldartal, the buff will increase enormously as a reward. Making a declaration would lower Collapse by 1 or more, especially with certain concords and styles. Keep in mind that Bosky Passage, Prophecy, and The Root nodes cannot be changed with Foldartals.

The etymology of each Foldartal's runic names (in Elder Futhark as a stand-in to Sami letters used in-game) are included in the tables below, pending the release of Expeditioner's Joklumarkar in the Global server at which they will be integrated to the respective Foldartal's page.

An example of the Samifjod Foldartals by interpreting the pattern of tree barks

Foldartals are wood barks fallen off from Samifjod tribal sacred trees. With specific runes on them, they represent the message the "Father of Ancestral Spirits" – Sami itself wants to convey with his children, the Samifjods. These messages may relate to the past, the future, or some pure emotion. Interpreting Foldartals is complicated because given the time, location, and people decrypting them, even same runes could yield drastically different meanings.

To carefully follow the will of Sami, Snowpriests and shamans in Samifjod tribes are trained to interpret Foldartals and offer prophecies and guidance according to them. They would piece two Foldartals together: the upper one is called the Layout (Gera Koma; ᚷᛖᚱᚨ ᚲᛟᛗᚨ), and the lower one is called the Origin (Gera Aesa; ᚷᛖᚱᚨ ᛇᛊᚨ), and make an interpretation, which is called a Declaration (Gera Vaenda; ᚷᛖᚱᚨ ᚹᛇᚾᛞᚨ).
