Hoshiguma is a 6★ Protector Defender who specializes in Defense and, unusually, DPS. As a Protector Defender, Hoshiguma can block up to three enemies and has high HP and DEF, allowing her to last longer than other Operators. Notably, her HP and DEF is one of the highest of all Defenders. What sets Hoshiguma apart from most other Defenders is that she can attack enemies in a range of one tile ahead of her with Hannya, like that of most melee Operators.
Hoshiguma's skills are an interesting combination of bolstering her DPS potential while improving her defensive capabilities at the same time:
- The first skill, Warpath, buffs Hoshiguma's ATK and DEF while active, with the latter being higher than the former. Warpath is a straightforward skill, although it is largely overshadowed by Saw of Strength (see below).
- The second skill, Thorns (not to be confused with the Operator), passively buffs Hoshiguma's DEF and causes enemies who attacked her to take Physical damage equal to a portion of her ATK. With Thorns, Hoshiguma becomes more useful in drawing fire from enemies with high ATK since she can also make them easier to be dispatched. Interestingly, Thorns is the only way to damage invisible ranged enemies (e.g. Invisible Crossbowmen) without blocking or revealing them first, and can also be useful against Enraged Possessed Throwers since it can make them die quicker from both Thorns' damage and their HP loss.
- The third skill, Saw of Strength, is Hoshiguma's signature skill: while active, it buffs her ATK and DEF with the former being higher than the latter, and she continuously spins Hannya to attack all enemies within her attack range simultaneously, similar to that of Centurion Guards but with no limit on the number of targets hit. Saw of Strength allows Hoshiguma to signifcantly contribute to DPS while keeping enemies at bay, reducing the burden her and other Operators have to bear, and should be her go-to skill.
Hoshiguma's first talent, Tactical Armor, gives her a small chance to resist an incoming damage (whether Physical, Arts, or even Pure – despite the in-game description claiming that Tactical Armor only works against Physical and Arts damage), improving her already great survivability further. Her second talent, Special Operations Strategy, provides a slight DEF buff to all Defenders, allowing Hoshiguma and her fellow Defenders to reliably tank enemy attacks.
Hoshiguma has two Operator Modules:
- Her PRO-X Module, Amulet, increases Hoshiguma's DEF by 20% when blocking enemies in addition to increasing her maximum HP and DEF; once upgraded, Special Operation Strategy's DEF buff is increased and it also buffs Hoshiguma's own DEF (which stacks with the original effect).
- Her PRO-Y Module, Gifts From Friends, increases Hoshiguma's block count to 4 in addition to ATK and DEF; once upgraded, Tactical Armor's proc chance is increased and her ATK is increased for a short time after she resists an incoming damage (which is refreshed in each instance).
Hoshiguma's base skill, Defender Expert α (Hannya at Elite 2), speeds up the skill Mastery training of Defender Operators by 30% (60% for Hannya) when she is assigned as the trainer in the Training Room.
Overall, Hoshiguma is one of the best Protector Defenders who can both deal heavy damage and withstand heavy punishment, allowing her to ensure that none of her comrades get hurt while opening the opportunity to strike back at the same time.
