- Not to be confused with Tola.
Toland Cash is an NPC in Arknights. He is a supporting character in Near Light and An Obscure Wanderer.
Background[]
Toland Cash, dubbed the "Guildmaster," is a Sarkaz bounty hunter hailing from the outskirts of Kazimierz. Long ago, his village was destroyed by Ursus soldiers and he was forced to become a wandering hunter until his encounter with Młynar Nearl the wandering hero.[1] Together, the two traveled around to execute justice in remote, lawless regions that were neglected by Kazimierz's government. Among Młynar's sworn brothers, Toland is the only one who understands his dilemma after the missing of his elder brother and his wife. Regardless, he still hopes that one day Młynar would come back and save the day.
As a bounty hunter, Toland is one of the most wanted criminals in the nation. He is wanted on numerous counts of murder, robbery, smuggling of Originium products, etc. He even gathered up other bounty hunters and reorganized them, after the disappearance of "Flamelung" and "Yellow Smog," — bounty hunters dispatched by Skadi during the chaotic treasure hunt in Dewville[2] — leading the authorities suspecting him of plotting an insurgency.[3]
Toland had his horns removed, though the reason behind it remains unclear.[4] He does, however, hint at it being a matter of avoiding trouble over his race.[5]
Kazimierz Major trilogy[]
Near Light[]
Toland first appeared when he secretly entered Młynar's room. Młynar was not surprised of his existence and insisted him to leave. In turn, Toland joked that he should not be in such a cold manner since he had helped him in protecting the Nearl sisters. Meanwhile, he mentioned that he was here in Kawalerielki for a specific mission. Even though Toland wanted to invite Młynar for it, he knew that he would immediately refuse it.[6]
Toland was interested in helping Pinus Sylvestris. Though his first meeting was interrupted by P.S.'s mourning for Jamie's death, he proclaimed he would come back and meet them soon.[7] Indeed, Toland rescued Iwona from the Armorless Union and personally dealt with Monique. Iwona not only thanked him for saving her life, but also accepted his request to aid P.S. and would discuss the matter with her fellow knightess.[3] Later on, when P.S. was discussing the plan for the second Kawalerielki Separation, Toland reappeared and gave them a a schematic of the K.G.C.C.'s headquarters. As a result, P.S. welcomed him to take part in the mission.[8]
As a close friend of Młynar, Toland had been trying to wake up his old heroism. He mentioned to Młynar that he had once entered a border village that was long neglected by the Kazimierzian government and described the horrible situation there. He also mentioned about the Union's attempt to conduct a purge onto the Infected community in Area 0, trying to arousing his lost spirit. In the end, Toland advised that Młynar should quickly make a choice as his neutrality would inevitably come to an end.[9]
Toland rescued Maria from her kidnap by the Union during Margaret's match with the Candle Knight.[8] He then brought her back to Marcin's bar and decided to leave. Though Zofia did not know who he was, she thanked him for saving Maria. In return, Toland gave Maria an advice that a true knight should not only limit oneself in the arena.[10]
During the night of the Separation, Toland helped Sona infiltrate the K.G.C.C.'s headquarters.[11] He also went to deal with Monique and her cleanup squad.[12] The battle continued during the city's total blackout, but Tola suddenly interfered them using his Nightzmoran talent. Meanwhile, the arrival of the Silverlance Pegasi forced Monique and her squad to retreat immediately.[13]
Toland was also responsible for saving the Corrupted and Withered Knights from their bondage by the K.G.C.C. as well as Tola's mercilessness. He quickly persuaded him to spare their lives, stating that he did not want to see his kinsmen killed.[10] After that, he brought the twin to a storehouse. He persuaded the Corrupted Knight to work for his bounty hunter group with his brother as it was the only way they could be freed from their slavery and survive. He was also disgusted to see their horns being cut off, a humiliating act for the Sarkaz.[4]
During the historical march of Margaret and the Blood Knight to the Champion's Hall, Toland came to stop the Armorless Union from their attempted assassination onto them. He was surprised to see that Młynar, the old wandering hero, had finally come to save the day.[1]
Toland helped enlighten the minds of both Młynar and Sona. In the aftermath, he had a talk with Młynar where they discussed about a future plan to restart the search for the missing parents of the Nearl sisters. Seeing that Młynar would have to do it alone, Toland encouraged him to ask help from his sworn brothers, though he was not sure whether they would forgive him.[14] As for Sona, he pointed out to her that the K.G.C.C. remains unharmed even though the Major incident devastated their interest. Sona listened to his account concerning other villages and realized that inequality is the root cause of Kazimierz's dilemma.[15]
Three days after the Major season, Toland brought Sona to Dewville where he had a meeting with Carol. He was inspired by the warriors of Rusthammer to start an uprising against Kazimierz's nobility together with the villagers. After the two arrived at Carol's house, they started the meeting and Toland declared that a new dawn Kazimierz's common folk had just begun.[14]
